Rhinoplasty

Author: Jenelle Castelli

Rhinoplasty (more commonly referred to as “nose job”) is a procedure performed on the nose to either correct nose-related health problems or to re-shape the nose for cosmetic reasons. It can aid in breathing problems and birth defects while also providing the patient with more self-confidence. Rhinoplasty is also one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery in the United States. For most people, rhinoplasty is a one-time operation with results that last a lifetime. However, what happens when rhinoplasty meets those inevitable people who just can’t get enough plastic surgery?

In this article I will introduce rhinoplasty surgery. I will also discuss rhinoplasty costs and what to expect during recovery from rhinoplasty. Further, I will touch base on the scenario of a bad nose job, as well as the surgery to correct it. Finally, I will mention how ethnic differences (in this case) lead to surgical differences in the operating room.

Rhinoplasty procedures can do an endless number of things to the patient’s nose. For people with breathing problems or birth defects, rhinoplasty can help. Rhinoplasty can also reduce or increase the size of the patient’s nose to better match the patient’s other facial features. Further, it can change the actual shape of the bridge or tip of the nose. Rhinoplasty can also narrow the span of the nostrils and change the angle between the nose and the upper lip. In the case of a patient who suffers from a complex, it is safe to say that rhinoplasty can help tremendously. The average cost of any rhinoplasty procedure can vary from $4,000 to $10,000. The absolute cost depends on the extensively of the surgery as well as the patient’s insurance company. During rhinoplasty, an incision is made either inside of, or in the creases of, the nose. This makes the scar almost invisible and allows the surgeon to access the bones and cartilage that makeup the framework of the nose. Once the cartilage and bones are exposed, the patient’s wishes direct the surgery. After the surgery is complete, sutures will hold the tissue in place. A splint is also worn as part of the patient’s recovery. This splint protects the new nose, as well as the sutures holding it together.

Other factors of rhinoplasty recovery include bruising around the eyes and swelling. The bruising usually fades within 1 week, and the swelling usually disappears within 3 weeks. The packing and stitches from the surgery are, in most cases, removed 3-7 days after the procedure. 1 to 2 weeks after surgery, most patients feel that they are ready to return to work. The skin on the nose is extremely sensitive after surgery, which requires the patient to wear sunblock at all times when going outside. The patient will have to take extra precautions when exposed to the sun for the rest of their life. The final results of the surgery may not show for up to 1 year, however most patients are happy with the results of surgery several weeks after the operation. However, what happens to the few that remove the bandages expecting the perfect nose, but instead find them selves looking at a nose that is worse than before surgery?

Revision rhinoplasty is a procedure that 10 to 15% of all rhinoplasty patients need. It basically tries to correct what a bad nose job has messed up. This type of surgery is more complicated than the initial rhinoplasty. This is due to scar tissue and weakened cartilage in the nose from the first surgery. Finding a good plastic surgeon will greatly reduce the patient’s risk of having to undergo revision rhinoplasty. There are endless numbers of rhinoplasty surgeons who are more than willing to help the patient in any and every possible way. In most cases, a consultation is scheduled. This helps the patient get a feel for the surgeon and helps the surgeon understand what the patient wants. The patient’s skin type, size and shape of the nose are all factors that the surgeon considers during the consultation. Why does the surgeon observe these things? In the case of African American rhinoplasty, the patients undergo the surgery in a completely different way. In the case of all other races, tissue and cartilage is removed to create the new nose. In the case of African Americans, however, tissue and bone must be grafted to the nose to achieve the desired look. The surgeon will also suggest several sizes and shapes of the nose that will compliment the patient’s other facial features. Sometimes, the patient goes against what the surgeon says and wants a certain type of nose no matter how ridiculous it may look one surgery is complete.

This type of patient is most likely addicted to plastic surgery. These people continue to undergo the same procedures time and time again. Most of the time, they will claim that the surgeon has made a mistake or that they have changed their minds as to how they want the body part to look. No matter what excuse they present, they cannot hide the fact that they simply want more surgery. In cases of the nose, this type of person runs a high risk of the nose collapsing completely. Every time the nose is operated on, the cartilage is broken down and the nose looses a small amount of its durability. In instances of repeated plastic surgery, the nose gets more and more weak until it “gives up” so to speak, and collapses. In several cases of celebrity nose jobs, it was clear that the celebrity was continuing to have the same procedure done over and over again. No one knows for certain why people find themselves addicted to going under the knife. Some think that the people were teased as a child about the part of their body that they can never seem to get quite right. Other people think that there is no trigger for this behavior, and it is “just something that happens”. I believe that some people are not happy with any aspect of their life, and therefore think that if they have the perfect body, everything else will get better. No matter what the cause, there are many people that simply cannot stop getting plastic surgery.

To conclude, Rhinoplasty can help patients tremendously by way of increasing self-confidence and aiding in several health-related problems. On the other hand, rhinoplasty can also destroy the nose if either the surgeon or the patient goes about the surgery in the wrong way.
